Yak Fiber Study

Yak reaching nose toward the camera looking for treats despite not being able to see because of the hair over its eyes.

Timeline 2020-2024, 2025-2030

Goal/Objective: Find more information with concrete numbers regarding fiber diameter and characteristics of yak fiber. Test micron and get a full histogram on 100+ individual yaks to get a good sample of the fiber characteristics of U.S. yaks as a baseline.

As the study progresses, I have more questions to answer but my initial questions are:

What are the actual microns of the combed yak fiber as it comes off the animal?

Do these measurements confirm the current publications’ information?

Justification: With more information regarding the fiber, producers can market the yak fiber easier and to a wider audience of fiber artists. Right now, yak fiber is a mystery to most fiber artists but is also classed as a luxury fiber.

Samples: 2-inch combing, cut, or other collection of fiber. Ideal method of collection is by combing. A snack sized baggie-full is perfect.

If you would like to participate in the study please complete the form and send the form with the collected fiber samples to:
